December News

The year is almost half over. It seems like only yesterday that I was welcoming the children through the front door.  We have a very busy schedule over the next three weeks.  We just returned from the Fire Safety House in Marietta. It was a wonderful trip. Please ask your children about what they learned and saw.  On Friday, December 4, we are having science center activities in the morning. We will be doing activities that work with the science standards we have been learning about this quarter. There should be some extra fun things to do.  Next week we will have another field trip, this time to the Cobb Civic Center to see the Nutcracker on December 8.  Finally on December 17, all second graders will have their holiday party.  More details about our party are forthcoming.  We are going to be busy. Hopefully, the children will continue to remain healthy.  We have been very fortunate this year in that regard.  Our holiday break is Dec. 19- Jan.4.

November News

Can't believe it is November already.  The children have really been learning a lot over the last few months.  They have made such great progress.  We have concentrated on addition and subtraction with regrouping in math. This is one of the hardest concepts they will have to learn this year. Please continue to practice these skills at home even after we have moved on to other math concepts. 

We are focusing on learning comprehension strategies to use while we read. Many of my reading groups are moving away from picture books and moving into chapter books.  Knowing and using these strategies will be critical when reading stories with few pictures.

We continue to work in Language Arts on learning the proper place to use capitalization and punctuation in sentences.  Most children are becoming more aware in our weekly Friday tests and are being good detectives and finding those errors but some may still need some reinforcement from home. The CRCT has many questions just like the ones they see on the Friday tests.

October News

Hard to believe October is here already.  We are wrapping up our first quarter and report cards will be coming out soon.  Thank you to all of you that supported our class basket at the Fall Festival.  Mrs. Stewart did an awesome job of putting it together. 

Our curriculum for this next quarter becomes more challenging.  We start geometry and telling time to the five minutes as well as subtract two-digit numbers with regrouping.  We learn to identify sources of energy in science. In social studies we continue to learn more about the historical leaders of Georgia. We will also learn more strategies for comprehending and decoding to become better readers in Language Arts.

                               October 21- Early Release: Students get out at 12:30

September News

We have had a great first month.  We have earned our first reward for compliments we receive from other adults in the school about our behavior. We are continuing to learn how to do and say things in a respectful matter to one another in our class meeting setting.

This month in math we will be starting to regroup in addition. This is a tough concept for some to grasp.  Extra help at home would be beneficial. In reading we are concentrating on picking appropriate books for our level and monitoring what we read so we can comprehend what we are reading. Your help at home in questioning your child about what they have read for their reading log will get them in the habit of doing that questioning on their own. In Social Studies we are learning about the Creek Indians and those early settlers in Georgia.  In Science we are working on Matter.  Have your child identify things at home that are solids, liquids and gases and their properties.

Thank you for helping your child remember to get their homework packets back on Friday. Let me know if I can be of help in any way.

Open House

This is just a reminder that Open House for 2nd grade is Tues. Aug 18th at 6:00.  Hope to see you all there.

Super Second Grade

I am so excited about this year.  We just finished our first day of second grade.  All went very well.  Everyone was happy, fed, loved and put on the correct bus to go home.  That makes it a great day. We have a lot of fun activities planned for this year.  Our Pumpkin decorating contest comes in Oct. We do Black History Reports in Feb.  Economics Day comes at the end of the year.  I want you to know in advance how much I appreciate all you do for the children and me in the classroom.  This is a community effort and I could not do what I do without your support.  If you ever need to contact me at school, my email address is sandra.niemeyer@cobbk12.org. Happy New Year

We hope everyone had a safe and restful holiday.  We look forward to getting back on track and making a lot of academic progress these next few months before the CRCT in April.  Martin Luther King Holiday is January 19 and conferences are coming up on January 26.  We will be letting out two hours early that whole week to accommodate conferences.  If you would rather have a phone conference, please let us know.  As always, our door is always open.  Let us know if we can help in any way.

October News

Dear Parents,

As we are settling into fall, we want to give you a few reminders. 

1. Report cards have gone out.  If you have questions, feel free to call up to the school or write us a note.  We can meet with you at your convenience.  Please return the report card signature card and envelope.

2. With the holidays approaching, please try to keep your child on as much of a schedule as possible.  It makes our days at school go much smoother.

3. If your child is out sick, please remember to send in a note for our records.

4. Because our lunch is late, we have many hungry children at snack time.  Please provide them with a healthy snack to eat.

Just wanted to give you a heads up about what we will be studying this month:

Language Arts:  learning second grade high frequency sight words and comprehension skills

Math:  learning to regroup 2 digit numbers in addition, counting money to $1.00

Science:  learning about the three states of matter

Social Studies:  learning the five regions of Georgia

Boosterthon Money

Parents,

Just a few days left to collect the money for the Boosterthon fundraiser.  All monies are due on Thurs., Aug. 28.  The fundraiser was so much fun.  The money collected will make it a great success.  We also need any unwanted small toys for our treasure box (happy meal toys etc.)  Remember one man's trash is another man's treasure.  Thank you for all you do.
