I was absent on Friday so I cannot wait to talk to the kids and see how their day was!
ELA: This week was amazing! We started our snake project. We have successfully made our snakes in class and have started bonding with them. Journals were collected for grades. All unfinished work was given plenty of time to be completed and was turned in on Friday as well. Grades and IEP progress reports will be reviewed at the conference.
ELA PREVIEW: We will begin our narrative writing paper on how we made our snakes. We will discuss the planning process, the assembly process and the writing process for this activity. Students will, as always, have the choice of which graphic organizer, working with the teachers and using the computer to type their final drafts. Once the informational paper is complete, we will move on to the creative writing/narrative but I don't see that happening this week.
READING: We continued in our read aloud book, Charlotte's Web and discussing the difference between prediction and inference. Read aloud journals were collected for a once per quarter participation grade. Reading response journals were collected as usual for a grade. Also, unfinished work was given time to complete for the end of the quarter.
READING PREVIEW: Main idea, inference, prediction and asking questions are going to be worked on this week. We will be reviewing reading journal expectations as well. Teacher conferences will be held independently with students.
MATH: We had tons of fun with word problems this week. We utilized the CUBES strategy and the 1-step word problem placemat strategy. The students got to teach their peers and I was so proud of all of them. Even if they were incorrect with their answer they taught with enthusiasm and gusto. Snaps for students! We also had a quarterly multiplication assessment. We had quite a few improve their scores. Congratulations to Aliyus for becoming our first Multiplication Master for the year. He will move on to division assessments while continuing to practice multiplication. Snaps for Aliyus!
MATH PREVIEW: We will be continuing on with 1 step word problems. We will slowly incorporate 2-step problems. We will also be working on a variety of operations as we go. Word problems are extremely important so I will be making sure that we are diligent with this instruction for the next few weeks.
SCIENCE/SS: We had great discussions for the unit on constructive and deconstructive forces. An assessment was given on Friday. I did modify the grades if too many students missed the same question. If more than 50% missed a question it was credited back to the student. If a student got one that more than 90% missed then they got a bonus point. Everything that was tested was covered in our discussions and review. If students participated and were actively engaged throughout the week then they should have done well. Students were advised that the test would be geared towards those that fit this criteria.

*Conference Week is coming up October 17th-October 21st. We will dismiss at 12:15 the entire week so that we can talk about how awesome your kid is. Here is my plan: homeroom teachers will do the scheduling for the conference/report card review. I will attend as many as possible and will do my best to help with scheduling so that things work out according to plan. If for some reason there is a conflict you have two options: I can deliver the information to the homeroom teacher or I can meet with you at a different day (or maybe that same day but a different time). My door is always open and we can meet to discuss at any point.
